look at that seal that looks likemy dog lookin' back at me well welcome back folks what were doin' is basically flippin'this kelp bed like this punchin' it down in the holes gettin' it all the way down to thewater column and givin' it jigs back up it's kind of chilly as you can tell you never seeme fish in a sweatshirt or shoes but they say it never rains in southern californiathey don't tell ya about the cold weather except for this guy in shorts (laughs) what'sthis water temperature here? about fifty four- fifty five. whew so you don't want to fall inespecialy if you're from florida. theres a good one ohhh nope good piece of kelp. straightdown that hole you'll see if anybody's home.
i might have to try my bait caster here doin'this vertical jiggin' like this there he is right there. nice. that is a lot like bass fishin'. heythat might be one to take home to see how these things taste. god when they're donethey're done aren't they? this time of year looks like it. flip him up just like a bass. checkthat fish out. he's got a little more color. absolutely beautiful like a salt waterlarge mouth huh?
there ya go. do they have teeth? yes they do. are they just are they sharp serratedsor what are they? yeah. they'll get a little longerwhen they're eating a bait fish a litle shorter when they're ya know chewin'. oh that's a lot like a large mouthlike sandpaper in there. right. check him out so you think that onesa keeper huh?
absolutely. welp we're gonna i guess put thisone in the ice box we'll see what we can do with another one. good deal. get another keeper there. alright. what other kinda species you got aroundhere? there's actuallly these are the kelpbass or calicos we call 'em there's two other species there's the barred sand bass and thespotted sand bass.
well they all kinda look alike or. yeah they're all part of the paralabraxfamily. paralabrax. that's their genus name paralab- hey there's another scientificname i can say then paralabrax i kinda like catchin' the megalops atlanticus. what's that? that's a silver king brother it'scalled a tarpon. oh nice.
i'm sure you've seen those. they are fun to catch. yeah i'd like to do that someday. so no tailin' redfish on these flatshuh? (laughs) no(laughs) pretty featurless but ayeah there's three species and they're all cool to target and they all have their ownintricacies and ways to a target 'em so its kind of a diverse fishery that a lot of peoplehaven't heard of and explored but they a they're really fun to fish for. uhhh.
kelp pulls too. that kelps got a great pull to it. yeah. it just don't pull back too good.owhhhh that was a hit. there he is. that's got some size to him i alwayswondered what the bigger ones fight like owhhh he's got one with him got one with him. soyou can almost do these like you do dolphin off shore is once you get one like this pophim up and let him just sit there and a he had a buddy with him let me show you whatthis one looks like this is a little bigger fish about the same size as that other oneisn't he? cooler man they look just like a
bass don't they? got a really white belly they're sittin'up out here on the sand. god. ouch. i'm bleedin' you know whatthat means it's gonna be a good day. (laughs). but, calico bass looks just like alarge mouth almost. got messed up in the salt water. cousin. that's a neat fish is he fourteen? he's kinda we'll have to put him onthe measuring stick i think he might looks
like he'll make it. well if we have to measure 'em theyain't worth keepin'. right on. just like at home. let 'em get big. these are paralabrax maculatofasciatus. (laughs) you go brother. ohp here we go, oh oh. it's a good one huh? oh he's got it. there he is.
ha-ha nice. dropped it what the heck is that? what the heck is that oh a tree fish. a tree fish is there anything i gottaworry about with a tree fish? just getting' your picture taken with'em 'cause they sure are ugly. what a weird lookin' fish let me getthis d.o.a. out from underneath me and i'll show him to ya, looks like one of the piecesof kelp. it does perfectly camophlauged. i caught somethin' that looked likethat in the amazon a little bit it's called
an arowana and a i guess they're in the wrassefamily too but we're gonna let this weird lookin' thing go, go back there and look likea piece of kelp again getting' alota firsts here today. cool. what a what do we got to do we'reoutta the kelp now. i think we should go up current hereand a do another drift down and do that inside again. sounds good to me we're gonna getrepositioned ya'all stay tuned we're gonna be right back with eric bent right here fromsanta catalina.
