hello, i’m dr. tyson teeples. i am a boardcertified oral and maxillofacial surgeon at columbia basin oral & maxillofacial surgeons.many people don’t realize that the average mouth only has enough room to accommodate28 teeth. it is not uncommon for teens and adults to experience pain or discomfort inthe back of their mouth as their third molars attempt to grow in. these molars are commonlyknown as wisdom teeth and can cause a whole host of oral health problems.it is uncommon for patients to have a large enough mouth to accommodate wisdom teeth withoutexperiencing symptoms which warrant removal. often times, the wisdom teeth grow below thesurface of the gums and remain undetectable at an early age. these impacted teeth canexperience issues such as the growth of cysts
and tumors, or may even grow at an angle,directly toward other healthy molars. this angular growth can cause crowding and misalignmentof your otherwise healthy teeth. many patients and parents of patients ask,“when is the best time to have wisdom teeth removed?†while wisdom teeth removal procedurescan be performed on adults, it is generally best to have wisdom teeth extracted duringthe mid- to late teens. by proactively removing wisdom teeth during this period, we can preventyour wisdom teeth from disrupting the normal growth and alignment of your healthy teeth.in addition, the wisdom teeth aren’t fully formed and the jaw bone is more forgivingat an early age, making the recovery much more comfortable following surgical treatment.some people have one or two wisdom teeth,
