when student athletes hit the field for fall sports, most believe they are fully protected with a helmet, knee pads and shin guards. we are joined with doctor damon jenkins who's explaing what happens is athletes do not use protect mouthgrounds."while
there has been a crucial focus on preventing concussions, parents and coaches need to be just as concerned about players' smiles," said dr. jenkins, owner of jenkins dental in coventry. "and not only is a custom mouth guard the best
defense against mouth injuries, it also protects against concussions."dr. jenkins explains that generic, soft thermoplastic guards do offer some protection, but an external hard shell can be added to a custom guard to improve rigidity. the guard
offers a precise, tight fit to the teeth and gums that is more comfortable, allows a person to speak clearly, plus it won't fall out. it can also be customized for looks."some athletes may think that a mouth guard is optional or really not important because
they don't play a high contact sport," said dr. jenkins. "but a mouth injury can occur during any physical activity." dr. jenkins advises parents that even if their young child doesn't have any permanent teeth yet, a mouth guard helps to protect surrounding bone
and tissue from damage that teeth can cause as they are ripped from the mouth. if a baby tooth is knocked out it is not necessary to have reconstruction. however, in some cases depending on a child's age, he or she may need space maintainers to hold
the spot until the adult tooth comes in.in the unfortunate event that a permanent tooth is knocked out, the following steps should be taken immediately:7 if the crown and root are intact, put it back in place and call your dentist right way.7 if
the tooth is dirty, rinse it with water, do not shrub it, to remove the debris and put it back in. 7 if unable to place it back in, put the tooth in milk or normal saline and get to the dentist.7 if a hospital emergency room is the
only option for treatment, you must request a resident dentist or a dentist on call to ensure it is properly treated.the tooth, if intact, can usually reintegrate. a dentist will splint the knocked out tooth to the teeth next to it for support until
the tooth heals into the bone. it may become ankylosed (fused to the bone) or require root canal therapy, build-up and crown. for more information - you can always go to our website.. wtnh dot com... go to the on-air tab and pull down to
