should you floss or brush your teeth first?i’ve heard that flossing first is a waste and that it makes brushing more effective. you should floss every day to get stuff outfrom between your teeth that brushing can’t get. i knew that already. but which should i dofirst? the american dental association doesn’thave a particular, recommended order. what do you recommend? if you floss before you brush, the fluoridein the toothpaste gets far more places than if you didn’t floss first.
not much use fluoridating food particles.or using tooth whitener on it, leaving uneven coloring. you can floss and brush more than once a day,if you like. then it starts getting repetitive. dentists usually recommend flossing firstso you can loosen food particles. then the brushing is more effective. though flossing can remove stuff, too. so does gargling and rinsing, but that canbe overkill. or just leave that medicine taste in yourmouth.
listerine was originally invented as an antiseptic,so that makes sense. why doesn’t the ada come out and say whata lot of dentists are already saying? they have enough on their hands with mountaindew mouth, where people drink a lot of soda and don’t brush, rotting their teeth intheir mouth. ah, the american equivalent of the big bookof british smiles. and then there is the fact that a lot of peoplejust don’t floss enough to begin with. it reduces the odds of plaque forming and evenheart disease. i hadn’t heard that. if you tell people they must floss first andthey already don’t, you may get less brushing
of the teeth. then we’re back to the 1950swhere they don’t say you have a cavity but the cavity count. and we’re approaching a future of engineeredbacteria that prevent tooth decay. we still don’t have replacement teeth yetthat don’t require hardware that makes the dentist look like a mechanic. you still needto brush and floss, and the order is up to you as long as you just do it.
